Already winning - we got the first turn.

My instinct would be to look across the diagonals for signs of a ship, so maybe avoid that.

I think the key is to not have them touching and to have no pattern.

You only have to search half the squares on the board. If you imagine that it's a checkers/chess board, you only have to guess either the black or the white squares (obviously until you hit a ship)

I would also avoid putting any pieces in a corner.
